Welcome to Stell-Air! We’re excited to help you begin your aviation journey and work toward your Ultra-Light Pilot Permit or Instructor Rating. Our experienced, Transport Canada–certified instructors provide personalized, one-on-one guidance through every stage of your training—both in the air and on the ground.

You’ll build skills and confidence in a supportive, hands-on learning environment tailored to your pace and goals. Whether you're training for fun or to become an instructor yourself, we’ll make sure you understand the requirements and help you meet them step by step.

Not sure where to start? A great first step is to book an Introductory Flight—an exciting, no-pressure way to experience flying and get a feel for what’s ahead!

Permit Types and Information

Requirements to Fly Solo in Basic or Advanced Ultra-Light Aircraft:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Hold a valid Category 4 Medical Certificate for the Ultra-Light Pilot Permit
  • Complete at least 20 hours of ground school, covering:
    • Air Law 
    • Navigation 
    • Meteorology 
    • Aeronautics
    • Emergency Procedures
  • Pass the PSTAR written test to receive your Student Pilot Permit
  • Score 60% or higher on the Ultra-Light Pilot Permit (ULTRA) written exam
  • Log a minimum of 10 flight hours, including:
    • 5 hours of dual instruction
    • 2 hours of solo flight

Passenger-Carrying Privileges for Ultra-Light Pilots

To carry passengers with your Ultra-Light Pilot Permit, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Hold a valid Category 4 Medical Certificate
  • Have logged at least 25 total flight hours, including:
    • 15 hours of dual instruction
    • 2 hours of cross-country flying
    • 5 hours of solo flight
  • Successfully complete a flight test

Become an Ultra-Light Flight Instructor

To train and teach students on Ultra-Light aircraft, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold a valid Category 3 Medical Certificate
  • Complete 10 hours of instructor technique training
  • Score 80% or higher on the Instructional Techniques (FITEN) written exam
  • Complete ground school focused on normal and emergency procedures for Ultra-Light aircraft
  • Score 90% or higher on the Ultra-Light Pilot Permit (ULTRA) written exam
  • Log at least 50 flight hours, including:
    • 5 hours of dual instruction
    • 5 hours of instructional technique flying
    • 25 hours of solo flight
  • Pass a flight test
